Research and Community Development

“Trees,” the timber/secondary wood products industries, and “tourism,” the leisure services industries play a vital role in the region’s economy.  Often people tend to short sell the products and services that are derived from their most abundant natural resources. Being so familiar they are easily overlooked or undervalued. Several initiatives are underway that are designed to increase the value and maximize the returns derived from environmentally sound uses of these assets.

Forest Products Initiative

Nature Tourism Initiative

Eighty-five percent of the 16,000 square mile U.P. landmass is forested.  The harvesting of timber resources and the use of its by-products make a substantial contribution to the U.P. economy, employing approximately 8000 local residents.  Northern Initiative’s objective of improving economic conditions through the sustainable use of regional natural resources has spawned several interesting research and development initiatives in the forest products industry.

Tourism supports 40,000 workers U.P.-wide. A nature tourism project involving five of the easternmost U.P. counties has recently been launched.
